As the Overton Square neighborhood is restored to its former glory, the On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Fest is serving as a major player in the revitalization process.
In 2013, On Location: MEMPHIS returned to Overton Square as the majority of the festival’s films were screened at Malco Studio on the Square – long a haven for independent filmmakers. This year, not only will filmmakers from around the world again have their works screened in one of Memphis’ most vibrant neighborhoods, a variety of musical acts will take over the area during the last weekend in April as well.
As OL:M expands its reach and notoriety, festival organizers made a concerted effort to add to the music portion of the program for 2014. What’s more, they also believed it was important to move the music stages from their previous home at venues downtown to the Overton Square area. This way, attendees will be able to simply walk or take a brief shuttle ride between each a
nd every venue.
Several Midtown music venues, each featuring a different genre, will be in use on both Friday and Saturday night of the festival, April 25th and 26th, respectively. The Blue Monkey will showcase rock and pop bands, Le Chardonnay Lounge will feature R&B and neo-soul performers, and just a short distance towards the Cooper-Young area, Otherlands will put singer-songwriter and other indie acts on its stage. The 1884 Lounge will be home to rap and hip-hop acts on Saturday only, and the festival footprint will even extend all the way to the University area, as Newby’s will showcase hip hop acts on Friday with rock taking over the stage on Saturday.
A variety of music will also be heard at other indoor and outdoor venues around Overton Square, and panels featuring film- and music-industry experts are slated for offices and conference rooms around the neighborhood.
“We’re thrilled to finally have so much of our festival in one place,” said On Location: MEMPHIS President, Lisa Bobal. “This will make the event that much more enjoyable for attendees, and it’s so cool that we get to a part of all the great things happening in Overton Square. We can’t wait to show it off.”
