To all Memphis Film Lovers,
Don't miss these great films coming to MALCO Studio On The Square on August 28th.
Don't hesitate, because they may not be here but for a week!
ELEGY (www.samuelgoldwynfilms.com )
Starts Thursday, August 28 at Studio On The Square
Driven by Isabel Coixets visually assured and deeply observant direction, "Elegy" charts the passionate relationship between a celebrated college professor and a young woman whose beauty both ravishes and destabilizes him. As their intimate connection transforms them more than either could imagine, a charged sexual contest evolves into an indelible love story.
With humanistic warmth, wry wit and erotic intensity, "Elegy" explores the power of beauty to blind, to reveal and to transform.
Starring Academy Award winner Ben Kingsley and Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz, with extraordinary supporting performances from Dennis Hopper, Patricia Clarkson and Peter Sarsgaard, Elegy is based on Pulitzer Prize-winner Philip Roths short novel "The Dying Animal".
FROZEN RIVER (www.sonyclassics.com/frozenriver )
Starts Thursday, August 28 at Studio On the Square Takes place in the days before Christmas near a little-known border crossing on the Mohawk reservation between New York State and Quebec.
Here, the lure of fast money from smuggling presents a daily challenge to single moms who would otherwise be earning minimum wage. Two women - one white, one Mohawk, both single mothers faced with desperate circumstances
- are drawn into the world of border smuggling across the frozen water of the St. Lawrence River. Ray and Lila... and the New York State Trooper who ultimately brings the two to justice.
COMING SOON - A special screening of the Manhattan Short Film Fest - Thursday, September 25, Studio On The Square...details coming soon!

New York, NY – August 20, 2008 – The Manhattan Short Film Festival
(www.ManhattanShort.com ) today announced the twelve finalists set to
screen across four continents between the 21st and the 28th of
September. Film lovers in Tennessee will have the opportunity view and
vote on the next generation of filmmakers when the Festival screens at Malco Studio on the Square in Memphis on September 21st .
This year’s festival exceeded expectations with 429 entries from 42
countries. The resulting 12 films are set to screen 295 times in 115
cities in one week – from as far north as Saint Petersburg, Russia to
as far south as St. Kilda in Melbourne, Australia – during the last
week of September.
The best short film and
winner of the 2008 Manhattan Short Film Festival will be determined by
the global theater-going public. After each screening, audience members
can vote for their favorite film. The votes will be tallied and sent
directly to the Manhattan Short headquarters where the winner will be
announced in New York City at 10 p.m. on Sunday, September 28, 2008.
In 2007 three of the finalists went on to screen at the Sundance Film
Festival in which one won, another was later nominated for a BAFTA,
while another went on to receive an Oscar Nomination. “We are expecting
similar results if not better with this year’s crop. The films are
simply outstanding,” said Festival Director Nicholas Mason
